Gravity Review

There is always one movie that comes out that changes the game, Gravity has accomplished that very feat. No film has quite captured the sense of wonder and fear of space as perfect as Gravity has with a story only fully understood on the big screen in 3D. Yes I did just say see it in 3D, preferably IMAX 3D (Well worth price!)

Gravity is basically about a Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a engineer on her very first mission in space, alongside a veteran astronaut on his last ride to the stars, Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), fighting for survival after debris from a Russian Satellite destroyed the space shuttle. This is much more than the drifting off in space film that so many people assumed. It is one hell of a white-knuckle ride from start to finish.

I walked into this film expecting to be stunned visually, I was not prepared for what I was about to see. In the history of cinema there has never been a film to capture the beauty of space and earth on the basic levels they are until now. This will likely be the closest I will ever get to being in space truly. You get so drawn in the film in the very first minute that you feel like you are there on the Hubble and Challenger with the astronauts. I was speechless at the pure wonder I was witnessing as Dr. Stone worked on the Hubble Telescope and Kowalski flew around on the jet pack.

Director Alfonso Cuaron knows extended sequences better than almost any other director. He utilizes the format to not only push the limits of imagination, but the feeling of being part of the movie and not just watching it. The opening sequence was perfectly executed with nearly 20 minutes of extended awesomeness. Now that isn't the only area of the film that has it, but Cuaron picked the most precious moments to do this to show the compelling story visually and story wise.

The 3D and CGI is flawless from start to finish. I'm usually a hater of 3D in movies ever since the resurgence of it a few years ago with a few exceptions. The biggest one being Avatar. That movie just blew my mind with the Jungle sequences because I was drawn into the world instead of drawn out. Many have tried to harness the power of 3D but fail miserably, but Cuaron has found that perfect sanction between when 3D is used to develop layers to story and just to freak you out.

The CGI universe (also actual world) developed in this film was breathtaking. More often than not, I felt like they actually filmed this in space. I was getting lost in this universe created and that is what movies are all about essentially. You can't have this beautiful environment without stunning sound.

The music and sound of this film will blow everyones mind because of its sheer realism. In Space there is no sound. We are hearing what the astronauts are hearing through vibrations in what they touch. The music is so touching and goes to heart pounding beautifulness when we are along for the ride of Dr. Stone. In an area of the universe where there is no sound, they did one hell of a job to making it one of the best sounding movies all time. Hearing just Sandra Bullock and George Clooney talk throughout was great in itself because of the great chemistry between the two.

A movie with just 2 people in space for 90 minutes, you better have a great cast to carry it. I must say the two leads were fantastically cast with the worried, greenhorn Sandra Bullock, and the charismatic seasoned George Clooney. They are like polar opposites but you can feel the connection they have as they fight for survival. I can see Oscars in these stars future because of this film. Sandra Bullock emotion throughout was just unbelievable. You feel her hurting, loneliness, and perseverance.

Gravity pulled all the emotional strings with the heart pounding, white knuckle fight for survival in a land of great unknown wonders and sheer beauty. This film sparked an emotion of fear and wonder of a place I haven't though out about like that since I was a little kid. The hypnotic sight of space has fully been captured on film finally, along with the unparralled beauty of Earth. This film will take you on a ride you will never forget. My sense of wonder has been reinstalled.

Side Note: Must see in IMAX 3D where available because it is breathtaking and well worth it!

Pacific Rim Is Getting Converted to 3D Against del Toro's Wishes

Yep, you heard that right. Pacific Rim is getting converted to 3D under Warner Bros. authority. This will come as a shock to most of you because we heard from the man himself, Guillermo del Toro, that he is against 3D in this film. He noticeably said it at SDCC earlier this year saying:
“I didn’t want to make the movie 3D because when you have things that big, the thing that happens naturally is you’re looking at two buildings at 300 feet.  If you move, the buildings don’t go like this (moves his hands closer together), there’s no parallax.  They’re so big that you barely notice anything no matter how fast you’re moving, so to force the 3D effect on robots and monsters that are supposed to be that high, you’re making them miniaturized, you’re making them human-scale.  I knew that the 3D effect sounded like a great idea, but it was gonna be counter.”
So, unfortunately the studio will always get their way in the end to make more money. Since 3D cost more for a ticket it should be a bigger hit, especially overseas. This film is about giant robots and monsters fighting and set in some parts of Japan…big bucks to be made in the Asian markets.

The film will still be released in 2D along with 3D. So, hopefully del Toro works something out great to make the film work in 3D and still normal in 2D. I hate conversations that are horrible. Best of wishes to you del Toro.

What do you think about the change? Will you still see it?

Disney and Pixar to Re-Release 4 Classics in 3D in 2012 & 2013

I'm guessing from the success of re-release of The Lion King in 3D last month, Disney and Pixar had a thought "hey we could totally take more money from families by re-releasing our other amazing classics in 3D."

2012
Beauty and the Beast (January 13),
Finding Nemo (September 14)
2013
Monsters Inc. (January 18)
The Little Mermaid (September 13).

The Governator trailer Online!

So, the story goes like this; a few weeks ago Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that his next project was going to something with the legendary Stan Lee. I thought "okay…just wait and see how it turns out". Well I waited and I'm very disappointed in Arnie and Stan. The story is completely stupid and sounds kinda boring. I do however like the animation style because it reminds me of the classic 90's era cartoons.

Also, they announced that the series will be made into a movie for a 2013 release in 3D. Why Arnie? Whyyyyy?!

The Governator will be released late 2012

Just watch the trailer and see how bad it is for yourself.

New Animated Tarzan coming in 3D

If you love Disney's Tarzan and really want to see a new one with more of Phil Collin's Beautiful music then your OUT of luck my friend, but if your a fan of germany-based Constantin Films and their main film series Resident Evil and Fantastic Four then your IN luck.

Variety is reporting that Constantin Films is bringing Tarzan back in animation, but Robert Kulzer and Reinhard Klooss will produce it and develop it as a CGI film in 3D. I don't know what to think this weird news because I wouldn't normally believe that a horror/action production company will make a CGI Tarzan movie.

Constantin Films in currently awaiting the release of Resident Evil: Afterlife and is starting production next month on Paul W.S. Anderson's 3D take on The Three Musketeers.

I will defiantly keep an eye on this project and update news when it becomes available.

SDCC: Cabin in the Woods not 3D anymore?

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's creature feature Cabin in the Woods may not be getting the 3D release it was pushed back for over year to convert the film in 3D.

Joss Whedon told the audience at Comic-Con that it was the studio that wanted to convert Cabin in the Woods to 3D because they felt that every Horror movie is being released in 3D. That is clearly a speculation that really didn't pan out.

It's funny that Whedon, himself, believes Cabin in the Woods should stay 2D because certain scenes were shot in very John Carpenter-esque  and are best looking in 2D. He later said "What we're hoping to do is to be the only horror movie coming out that is not in 3D."

Cabin in the Woods hits theaters on January 14, 2011 in 3D or 2D? Who Knows yet?

More news to come.

SDCC: Saw 3D Trailer and News

IGN got the exclusive first look at Saw 3D the final installment of the gory series. The trailer dosen't show much, but it looks like we have a public execution, which is cool in its own way.

Also, I mentioned above that Producer Oren Koules told USA Today "We have told the story we wanted to tell, and this is going to be a great farewell." and "It's Time to stop".  It's about darn time. I think they should have just had a trilogy.

They will break the news Friday at Comic-Con during the Saw 3D panel. Their will be some tears shed in the audience, but they can look forward to Hostel 3 to fill their gory pleasures.

New Thor Movie Still

Last week L.A. Times released a pic from Thor. Now they have released another movie still from the upcoming comic-book film Thor The still shows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) kneeling infront of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Odin's wife Frigga (Rene Russo), who raised Thor has if he were her own child. On the right is Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) and Fandral (Josh Dallas), two of the members of the "The Warrior's Three", Thor's comrades and best friends. The scene looks pretty epic to say the least.

Director Kenneth Branagh is staying true to the comics because Odin's throne is the hilt of the Sword of Doom. So, it's save to say that Branagh did his homework and might make a Marvel movie to rival the awesomeness of Iron Man.

Thor hits theaters in 2D and 3D on May 6, 2011.

Cool New Thor Pic

LA Times has released a new image for Marvel's upcoming Thor. The image shows Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

In other Thor news, Hero Complex has revealed information that will anger some movie fanatics and will make average movie-goers happy. The news is Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America will be released in 3D. I would be okay with it if they were filmed in 3D and not "converted".

The Directors of Thor (Kenneth Branagh) and Captain America (Joe Johnston) are a little hesitant about using 3D, but they believe they could make it work, unlike Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender

So I can't wait to see how they will look when they come out.

Thor hits theaters on May 16, 2011 and Captain America hits on July 22, 2011.

Pr0n Version of Avatar Coming?

Mega-Pr0n company Hustler is releasing a 3D-Pr0n0graphic parody of Avatar this Fall. The film will be Hustler's highest budgeted "film" to date and will be the 3rd "film" to be released by them in 3D. The film will be titled This Ain't Avatar XXX.

Hustler has been making millions from their "This Ain't" series including parodies of Star Trek, Harry Potter, Married with Children and many, many more. So, fans of Avatar wanting to see the sex scene to full extent will finally get to see this Fall in 3D too. Something tells me it's not very different from humans.

PS3 Goes 3D

The Playstation 3 has now entered the realm of 3D and is bringing some of it's best titles with it.  As of now, PS3 owners with a 3D TV and glasses can play Super Stardust HD, WipEout HD, Pain, and the demo version of Motorstorm: Pacific Rift in stunning, eye popping stereoscopic 3D.

Games such as Gran Turismo 5 and MLB: 10 The Show are already being shown in 3D, but don't have a set release date.  Some of the biggest Playstation 3 games will be available in 3D later this year.  Expect to see more and more games coming to 3D at E3 2010 as the technology unfolds and is integrated into our consoles.

With Sony and Nintendo already making they're way to 3D, you may wonder where Microsoft stands. Well, it is rumored that Microsoft will be stepping into the world of 3D at E3 next week.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I've been gone for a while and now that summer has come around and I have a lot more free time, expect to see me more frequently around here.  "Stay Classy San Diego".

Daily Movie News for Wednesday January 6th, 2010.

  • Avatar seems to be unstoppable; after just 17 days the epic 3D film has made about $1.2 billion worldwide beating The Dark Knight's $1 billion as the fastest to $1 billion. Also, Avatar should beat Transformers 2 as the highest grossing film of 2009.

  • Production Weekly is reporting that The Hobbit will begin shooting this June in New Zealand. The film will be cut into two full films. The two installments are expected to be released in December 2011 and December 2012. No news on how the MGM bankruptcy problems are going to affect the production.
