Video Game Reviews 2009

2009 was a great year for video games and today I'll be doing a round-up of all the reviews from this year. The reviews range from games like Infamous, to Modern Warfare2. Here is a list of all the games reviewed this year.

Infamous is just a great game and every PS3 owner should have atleast rented it and played it through. Play Infamous, it will not disappoint. It gives you the chance to use your recently acquired powers for good or evil. I gave Infamous an 81 of 100. Check out my full review at http://thelaststands.blogspot.com/2009/10/infamous-review.html.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of my favorite games of 2009. It has potential to be GOTY. Arkham Asylum has to be the best Batman game ever created. It does a great job of mixing action gameplay with stealth gameplay. If you haven't played Arkham Asylum then you are really missing out. Arkham Asylum got a 91 of 100. Go to http://thelaststands.blogspot.com/2009/10/batman-arkham-asylum-is-best-comic-book.html.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has to be the most visually beautiful games I've ever played. This game looks so good it could almost be a movie. It puts you in the shoes of Nathan Drake on his adventure in search for Marco Polo's lost fleet. Among Thieves is a definite buy for any PS3 owner. Check this game out. I gave Uncharted 2: Among Thieves a 93 of 100. Look at my full review at http://thelaststands.blogspot.com/2009/10/uncharted-2-review.html.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the original Modern Warfare. MW2 is one of the greatest FPS's of all time and it's sales can prove that. The online multiplayer is just as great as the original with just a little more to offer. If you don't own this game already you have no idea what you are missing. Modern Warfare 2 is the best multiplayer experience you will find. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 brought home a 91 of 100. See my full review at http://thelaststands.blogspot.com/2009/11/modern-warfare-2-review.html.

I'll be back next year with a plethora of reviews for your eyes gaze upon.

The Red Band Trailer for Repo Men

Here is a first trailer released for Universal's Repo Men. Directed by Miguel Sapochnik and starring Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Forest Whitaker (Vantage Point), and Liev Schreiber (Wolverine). Based on the futuristic thriller  "The Repossession Mambo" by Eric Garcia. Looks really interesting and could be very good. Reminder: Trailer is graphic and shows nudity.

First "The Karate Kid" Trailer

Here is the first trailer for the remake of the classic 1984 film The Karate Kid. The remake stars Jackie Chan as the new Mr. Miyagi figure and Jaden Smith as a new apprentice. The film borrows elements from the original, but adds it's own take on the story. I'm a fan of the original and it's sequels, but this remake may be either good or fail badly. Remakes never really turnout well. You decide for yourself.

New Kick-Ass "Red Band" Trailer

This is a new Kick-Ass "redband" trailer focused on Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz). The trailer gives more of an insight on her capabilities as a fighter and a kid. I will warn you that the scenes shown are very graphic with things like a little girl chopping off a grown man's leg and dropping the "F-Bomb". Starring Nicholas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Chloe Moretz.  Hitting theaters on April 16, 2010.

Avatar Review

Avatar is the newest epic action/adventure film to be released. Directed by the legendary James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, and Giovanni Ribisi.

Avatar has been in some form of production since 1994 and progressed to what you see today in 2009. The reason it was in production for about 15 years is because the massive cost and lack of special effects evolution. Cameron worked to even create a new camera technology just for Avatar and future use. Finally, he was able to finish his vision and be his first feature film since Titanic in 1997.

I am a huge fan of Cameron since I have seen The Terminator 2 when I was around 5 years old. I know that might seem a little young to watch that work of art, but I fell in love with the idea of a unstoppable robot trying to kill you. Since then, I have seen every film he has made and fell in love with them also. I have even seen his student-film Xenogenesis, which isn't too bad. I was going to wait in line at Comic-Con for hours just to see 25 minutes of Avatar footage.

Avatar is a spectacular visual film and not a bad plot either. The thing that makes Avatar huge is its special effects. They incorporate the most stunning photorealistic effects I've ever seen in my life. Most of the time in movies you can tell that the character interaction with a cg figure is awkward at the least. Cameron made easily the most convincing  interactions with human and cg ever. I searched for flaws in the natives and jungle background of Pandora, I found nothing that wasn't convincing and was in shock because of this. The animals are beautifully designed and realistic, along with a amazing jungle with it's vivid color scheme and photorealistic backdrop. I know some will say the planet looked to fake because of the unnatural colors, but thats because cameron was going for a bright dream planet that I say took full effect  of the film and we are not used to seeing something of this nature, so we categorize it as fake looking. The only problem with the film is the same as most films is the plot. The plot is unique and cool, but panned out like any other epic sci-fi film. The film was predictable in most scenes and you could predict the end about halfway through and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It payed off with the astounding action with the beautiful score by the Cameron favorite James Horner. To see the film to the full effect of what it was intended, you should see it in 3D because its not a gimmick. You are immersed into the world of Pandora. I have seen it twice in 3 days and was in heaven of enriched special effects. You have to see this film in theaters and in 3D. Don't wait for DVD and Blu-ray to watch it.

I give the film based on just the plot around 85 out of 100. Although, including the groundbreaking and revolutionary special effects I give it a strong 97 out of 100.

R.I.P. Actress Brittany Murphy Dead at 32

Actress Brittany Murphy was declared dead after arriving to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in L.A. early Sunday morning. Various news sites have picked up on the report by tabloid news site TMZ that she went into full cardiac arrest and passed away. No news on the cause of this sad story. She was first put into
spotlight in Clueless at age 18. Then, gained more attention in the 2001 thriller Don't Say A Word, which gained her key roles in 8 Mile, and starring in comedy films like Just Married with Ashton Kutcher, Uptown Girls with Dakota Fanning and later in Little Black Book. She starred in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City with Bruce Willis.

As for her films currently in production, there hasn't been any news on them. IMDB list 5 films she is attached too. She is currently in post-production of Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, Abandoned, and Something Wicked. These films will most likely get released with her in them, but her in production films Shrinking Charlotte and Poor Things are up in the air. If she filmed something for those films they may hire another actress to replace her or use her footage in some way, shape, or form.

I really loved her work and hope she enjoyed her short time here on Earth.

New Clash Of The Titans Trailer

The new Clash Of The Titans trailer has been released and it just looks amazing. Its directed by Louis Leterrier and features actors such as Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Gemma arterton, and Danny Hutson.

Clash Of The Titans is centered around the myth of Perseus. Being the son of the king of gods Zeus(Neeson), Perseus (Worthington) is driven to save his family from the grip of Hades(Fiennes), the god of the underworld. Perseus volunteers to lead a malignant journey to defeat Hades before he can overthrow Zeus and unleash hell. Only if he can accept his power as a god, defy his own fate, and create his own destiny, will he survive.

The trailer starts out with some new footage, then shows the footage from the previous trailer, and ends it with some scenes from an epic battle. Check out the trailer below.

Sony Considering PSN Subscriptions

A survey from IPSOS Online Situation reveals that Sony is considering premium subscription plans for Playstation Network Users. These plans show potential prices and premium services.

The survey begins with this text:
Sony is considering offering a premium PlayStation Network subscription in the future. The subscription offering would provide new premium features you could choose to pay for and are in addition to the features currently available for free such as access to online multiplayer gaming (current features would remain free).

Most of these services are pretty interesting, but some are just a little "repugnant", such as Trophy Alerts, Token Waggering, Member Demo of Full Games, and Member Only In-Game Content. Services like Cross-Game Voice Chat Access, Facebook Connectivity, Online Music Service, Online Music Video survice, and Netflix Access Without A Disc should be free and would be just "repugnant" to pay for them.

Here is a full list of all the subscription options and services.

I'll post some more on this later when I hear more about it.

Trailer of the Week- Iron Man 2

The Trailer of the week is the highly anticipated Iron Man 2. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Mickey Rourke, and Gwyneth Paltrow. The first one was great, but this one looks amazing. I seen some awesome things for this film at Comic-Con. I can't wait to see this follow-up.

The world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Paltrow), and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Cheadle) at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces.

Daily Movie News

Here is the Daily Movie News for Thursday December 17th, 2009

* Director Brian Singer (X-Men,Valkyrie, Superman Returns) is returning to the X-Men series. He announced at the premier of Avatar that he has signed on as Director of X-Men: First Class. First Class is the next origin story in the X-Men universe. The film will have a look at the early days of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and many others at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Also, just announced that a new writer Jamie Moss (Street Kings) will write a draft for the film. Josh Schwartz wrote the original draft. So I cant wait for some good X-Men movies.

* Rene Russo (Lethal Weapon 3) has been cast in Kenneth Branagh's Thor. She will be joining the already amazing cast as Odin's wife Frigga, who is Thor's "Stepmom". The list of actors being cast in this film is outstanding. So look for this movie in early 2011.

* An arrest has been made in the Wolverine: Origins leak before the film hit theaters. They are taking bootleggers very serious now, so watch out and don't do it or get caught.

* IESB reported that Spider-Man 4 "has been put on indefinite hold", but this was proven to be false. The production is taking a break for the holidays. This is not that unusual either, alot of films do this during the holidays.

* Golden Globe Winners Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio will present director Martin Scorsese with the Cecil B. DeMille award at "The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards" on Sunday,  January 17th.

* Dreamworks Animation has hired Ethan Reiff (Kung Fu Panda) and Cyrus Voris to Adapt Gil's All Fright Diner by author A. Lee Martinez. The story revolves around a vampire and werewolf. They Battle zombies and try to save the world. after they stop at a diner in the desert that is a conduit for the supernatural. So sounds like this could be awesome with a plot like this one.

Spike TV VGA 2009 Round-Up

Tonight was the Spike TV Video Game Awards and there was a "plethora" of great games announced. Many games premiered tonight such as Arkham Asylum 2, UFC Undisputed 2010, Medal of Honor, Halo: Reach, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Tron: Evolution, Crackdown 2, The Force Unleashed II, and many more. Here are some videos all the action at tonight's VGA's.

Arkham Asylum 2:

To get more info on Arkham Asylum 2, head on over to www.arkhamhasmoved.com.

UFC Undisputed 2010:

I don't really see much difference visually and the video doesn't show any new features. One thing that's new is the addition of Kimbo Slice.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands:

This is the next inst in the franchise starting a new story for players and dropping the fruity art style from the previous game.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II:

This is supposed to be a sequel, but I don't see how the plot will work out.

Medal of Honor:

Can anyone say Modern Warfare. This looks almost identical to both Modern Warfare games.

Spec Ops: The Line:

Another post-apocalyptic shooter.

Crackdown 2:
Looks fun.

Tron: Evolution:

Don't know what to say. Could be fun, could be shit.

True Crime:

In my opinion, this game looks really bad. Last gen worthy.

Halo: Reach:

I just hope they change something for once and drop the vibrant colors.

That's all for now, I'll post so more on the Spike TV VGA's 2009 later. See ya.

PS3 Is The Best Gaming Platform Of 2009

Review monster Metacritic has released a list of the top games and consoles of 2009 with the Playstation 3 landing in 1st place on the Game Platform Power Ranking.

The Game Platform Power Ranking includes the average review score of games across the platforms and accounts for the games scoring a 90 or higher when they judge the winner.

Next to the PS3 is PC, which had a better median metascore, but not as many good to bad game ratio. In third was Xbox 360 and fourth was the PSP.

The PS3 wasn't just the winner of the Game Platform Power Rankings, but it also has the top three best reviewed games. Those games are Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Street Fighter IV.

It's about time Sony came out shining and getting the respect they deserve. Keep up the good work Sony.

Trailer of the Week-Brooklyn's Finest

This weeks Trailer of the Week is the action/drama film Brooklyn's Finest. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). Starring Richard Gere (Pretty Woman), Don Cheadle (Traitor), Ethan Hawke (Fast Food Nation), and Wesley Snipes (Blade).

Burned out veteran Eddie Dugan (Gere) is just one week away from his pension and a fishing cabin in Connecticut. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Hawke) has discovered there’s no line he won’t cross to provide a better life for his long-suffering wife and seven children. And Clarence “Tango” Butler (Cheadle) has been undercover so long his loyalties have started to shift from his fellow police officers to his prison buddy Caz (Snipes), one of Brooklyn’s most infamous drug dealers. With personal and work pressures bearing down on them, each man faces daily tests of judgment and honor in one of the world’s most difficult jobs. When NYPD’s Operation Clean Up targets the notoriously drug-ridden BK housing project, all three officers find themselves swept away by the violence and corruption of Brooklyn’s gritty 65th Precinct and its most treacherous criminals. During seven fateful days, Eddie, Sal and Tango find themselves hurtling inextricably toward the same fatal crime scene and a shattering collision with destiny. New Medal Of Honor

EA has just announced the reinvention of the their classic franchise Medal Of Honor. This latest installment is to be in the modern ages and set in Afghanistan. It is said to be "the most authentic modern war experience" to be in a game. The game is being developed at EA Los Angeles and DICE, who is responsible for Battlefield: Bad Company 1 and 2. The bearded, box-art soldier is a Tier 1 Operator, "a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle," according to EA. They also said that it will let gamers "step into the boots of these warriors and apply their unique skill sets to a new enemy in the most unforgiving and hostile battlefield conditions of present day Afghanistan."

Medal of Honor is going to debut at the Spike TV VGA on December 12th. It is set to be released for Plastation 3, Xbox 360, and PC sometime in fall 2010.

Daily Movie News

It's Tuesday time for Daily Movie News.

* Director Paul Greengrass (Bourne 2 and 3) has opted out of Bourne 4, which has already been in development hell. The most likely reason is that Universal has hired two writers to pen a script. George Nolfi who co-wrote Bourne 3 and working with Damon on another film. The second writer was hired without the directors consent. That writer is Josh Zetumer, who is a studio favorite and on the "Blacklist" of writers they use alot. Due to Greengrass's friendship with the star, he may return at a later date.

* Modern Warfare 2 director Keith Arem will make his feature directorial debut on the action/thriller Frost Road. The film centers on a young man who awakens from a car accident to discover he one of the few survivors in the aftermath of a mysterious outbreak that struck a small coast town on the East Coast. Somehow immune to the contagion, he tries to save the remaining survivors as he struggles to prevent the deadly wave from spreading across the planet. Arem also wrote the script.

* Director Todd Phillips (The Hangover) says that The Hangover 2 script is half done. He is keeping the plot under wraps for now, and promises that it won't rehash the events in the first film. Also, he said its not the Las Vegas setting that was funny, but the 3 main characters.

* Summit Entertainment has acquired Ben Magid's spec script Invasion. The film opens with a wicked subway accident in which the survivors (protagonists) climb from the wreckage to find, now "snowy", city in ruins. What they encounter topside is bodies, mobs of people in a state of panic and acidic "goo". Eli Roth and Eric Newman will help steer the project.

* Actor Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) is rumored to star as Hawkeye in Marvel's highly anticipated adaptation The Avengers. No director is attached at the moment. The film is targeted for a may 4th, 2012 release.

* Actor Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins) said that the Green Lantern film he is attached to star isn't a labored Origin film that picks up in third act and some of the best parts don't have him in costume. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is directing for 2011 release.
