Official Now! Lucasfilm Confirms J.J. Abrams Directing Star Wars: Episode VII

The biggest news of the year, that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars 7, has finally been confirmed by Disney and Lucasfilm earlier this weekend with this briefly (long) statement about it. So here it is folks

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

"It's very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie," said Kennedy. "J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture."

George Lucas went on to say "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

"To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor," J.J. Abrams said. "I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year's Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm's preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

I for one, had called it! He was one of the directors I knew could handle the series in my editorial a few months ago here . I can't wait to see this come together.

The Theater List for Star Trek Into Darkness 9 Min Footage

This Week is huge for you Trekkers out there! Not only did we get a badass poster for it, we also got the epic announcement trailer! Well, now we get the list of theaters that will be playing the 9 minute footage for Star Trek Into Darkness that will be playing in IMAX 3D before the Hobbit. (It's gonna be a loooong movie night).

Holy Trekkie!! A theater close to me will actually be playing the footage! First time since The Dark Knight to do so. Thank You J.J. Your the best! Check out your state and see if one is close to you and if not just go back to crying in bed at night while cuddling closely with your Spock action figure. It's okay I promise *pat on back*.

Here is the very very long list

The extended preview of J. J. Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will debut in digital IMAX® 3D beginning December 14th. Check out the participating theatres below.

Star Trek Into Darkness Announcement Trailer is EPIC!!

Star Trek Into Darkness looks more like it should be called Star Trek Into Epicness! This has to be one of the best (if not only) announcement trailers I've ever seen. We get to see so much stuff going on and see the villain! Is it KHAN??IS IT KHANNN??? No, I believe it isn't sorry fellow Trekkies. It could be him but the clues are not pointing towards him, but more towards Gary Mitchell. *sounds really not scary or bad guy sounding like blade, machete, slash, basically anything involving a knife*. Most of Trekkies are arguing over who the hell this villain can be and we get that name thrown around along with Garth of Izar, or Kirk's Brother from another timeline, or even Picard. Let's just say some of those sound really good but others uhmm not so much. Sorry Picard.

Here are the 2 trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness. The first is the official U.S. trailer while the other is the Japanese version with 14 extra seconds! They get everything good now *stop with hands crossed*. The extra 14 seconds gives Trekkies a familiar scene from Wrath of Khan.

Also, this is just a teaser for a trailer! How can they top this on Decemeber 17th and watch 9 I mean 9! minutes of footage in IMAX with the Hobbit at select locations. (in next article)

An Awesome New Star Trek Into Darkness Poster

Today is just full of poster getting released for next years big blockbusters and while the last one was a bit lackluster or unfinished feel to it (I won't say any names *cough* Superman *cough*), this Star Trek Into Darkness poster is very detailed and full of destruction! It reminds me of the posters for TDKR, but hey it was awesome so they can reuse it. It gives us many questions about what is going on because it appears to be taking place in London? I recognize that skyline anywhere *I really don't but someone told me and I shall trust that random person*. Check it out

Star Trek Into Darkness beams into theaters on May 17, 2013

Editorial: Who Should Direct Star Wars: Episode 7?

Last week the huge news broke that Disney bought Lucasfilm from George Lucas and that Star Wars: Episode 7 will be happening very soon. 2015 to be exact! So with no director attached to the project ,after Lucas refuses to do anything, we have an opening that needs to be filled by someone with a true vision and can accomplish a great sic-fi opera film. So who could make the cut? Who has the guts to try ? Here is the short list of known directors I believe could take over the series and try to transform it into a new classic trilogy. Some of them are established in the sic-fi ranks, while some are a bit out there in style and emotion but could have the goods somewhere. Here is the list in no real particular order.

Jon Favreau

Jon is one of the best men for the job for numerous reasons. He is a nerd with a sense of humor and vision of action and sic-fi. He is perfect for getting the tech and cgi looking amazing, all while being able to have great characters and development. He approached Iron Man with a vision and changed Marvel films for the best. He could very well make a character like Hans Solo come alive and have attitude. Already directed Ford before, again would be a no brainer. I am rooting for him to at least try and come up with a pitch to direct it. He has the goods.

Matthew Vaughn

Vaughn is a more natural person for doing a fun role then some because he gets action, he gets humor, he gets awesomeness, most importantly he gets fans. He brought the world the legendary Kick-Ass and made it more mainstream for people and fans adored it just the same. He took over the reigns of X-Men from Bryan Singer and made a classic and one of best in series. If he took over for the Star Wars films he would be very conscious of what we want and what will be awesome on film. Expect great action and great characters. Also, I have big hunches he will be one of the finalist for the job because he recently backed out of X-Men and I wonder if this is the reason why? hmmmm.

Neil Blomkamp

This man is probably one of the biggest nerds making movies right now. I mean this guy spent years perfecting the Halo movie to be made and it got scrapped but that didn't stop him from making one hell of a good sic-fi movie with District 9. He works amazing with cgi effects and could bring the creatures and landscape to life with great direction no problem. He is a huge nerd and, even better, he is a true visionary. Expect big things from this man in the next few years with some original sic-fi films.

Duncan Jones

To me, Jones is more like retro George Lucas than anyone else on this list because of his films to date. He is one of the only people making films to use models and they look damn good. Moon is one stunning film story and visually wise and reminds me how Lucas used to be back in beginnings with THX 1138 and Star Wars. Jones isn't very mainstream..yet, but he will make his mark soon and he could very well help bring Star Wars back to its roots of story and great practical effects with cgi mixed in.

Did I miss your vote for director? I have a few more names after the jump for you if your interested…

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol IMAX Poster

The new cool poster for M:I- Ghost Protocol has been released and it's pretty awesome at showing Tom Cruise hanging from the tallest building in the world and Tom being short helps with the height effect. The image really shows off how awesome Ghost Protocol will be in IMAX.

The newest Mission: Impossible film isn't directed by J.J Abrams sadly, but we have the talented director Brad Bird (The incredibles) to helm the fourth entry. He has quite the rep as an animated film director and this is his first live-action film. From what i've seen of it, I am impressed and can't wait to see this movie.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol will be released on December 16th in theaters and IMAX

Super 8 Poster and Trailer

This weekend has proven really worthy of Alien movies with Battle: LA taking first place in box office and finally getting a full trailer for the mystery alien flick Super 8. Also, we get a very "off beat" poster that is actually really cool.

The trailer finally gives great insight to the movie and features a beautiful score that really feels like it's from the 70's. J.J. Abrams is a truly visionary director and could be the Spielberg of the 21st Century.

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

'Super 8' Super Bowl Trailer

The trailer that everyone has been waiting for has finally been released during the big game. It's only 30 seconds long, but it shows some interesting scenes. It really does look like it was made in the 70's. I can't wait for this movie. It is basically the summers only movie not to be based on some comic, book, board game, or toy.

Also, director J.J. Abrams gave more details on the plot of Super 8 during a interview with the L.A. Times. Here is the general plot for the film. "The Paramount Pictures release is set in Ohio in 1979 and introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes — a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman."

Super 8 hits theaters on June 10th

On-Set Footage of J.J. Abrams' Super 8

Super 8 is one the most hyped movies of 2011 and could be an amazing throwback to the 70's sci-fi era. J.J. Abrams is Filming it now in a town in West Virginia and some local resident uploaded some on-set footage he took.

The local wrote this as description on YouTube "I just recently found out that the movie Super 8 was being filmed in my hometown and we walked down to see the set last night (10/08/10) during filming. There were a lot of military vehicles, soldiers, and 70's cars. (We even caught glimpse of one of the stunt cars) The whole place was lit up by huge stadium lights and it looked like they were shooting with a camera on a big crane arm. Hope you enjoy."

Here is footage

Trailer of the Week - Super 8

Trailer of the Week goes to the trailer that came out of nowhere and bit me in the a$$ with awesomeness. I don't know much about it yet because its a J.J. Abrams film and he always keeps them hidden very good, but it got me excited when I heard J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg were making a "alien" flick. I just can't wait to play the probably great viral marketing and see more of this very peculiar film.

Directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg and thats all that I know about the cast and crew. That is phenomenal.

Here is the only plot details I got and they might even be wrong. Who knows until a full trailer arrives. In 1979, a train carrying important cargo from Area 51 is destroyed, causing its contents to be unleashed upon the world.
